LoPresti School - Best Dressed in the Valley?
The students at Anna LoPresti School in Seymour may be the best dressed in the Valley this year thanks to the Corporate Volunteer Council's annual Back to School Clothes for Kids Project. On Thursday, August 24, eighty-six students previously identified by the school administration were presented with a foot locker of new clothes for the opening of school. Nationally, statistics show that many children in need miss the first few days of school simply because they do not have new clothes to wear. The hope of the CVC is that by providing the children with clothes and school supplies that they will be encouraged to do their best while receiving a boost to their self-esteem The students received two new outfits, a coat or jacket and a backpack full of school supplies such as pens, pencils, paper and colorful markers. During the course of the afternoon students and CVC members were treated to chocolate chip cookies and juice by Dave Grant Caterers while Pitney Bowes provided ice cream. The Corporate Volunteer Council is a coalition of local businesses and corporations that have an active employee volunteer involvement program. The Back to School Clothes for Kids project is a favorite to the Council members. "The employees at American Skandia are very generous and supportive and think that this is an excellent way to support the community," said Susan McHugh, Communications Assistant, at American Skandia. The company adopted 25 children. Market Data Retrieval’s employees, who adopted 15 children, have made a point to support education in the Valley community. "In keeping with that, the company participates in the Back to School Clothes for Kids project by adopting as many children as they can take. Each department within the company takes as many children has they can manage," stated Marie Mulholland, Project Leader and coordinator of the Back to School Clothes for Kids at Market Data Retrieval. "Our commitment to this project is to help these children feel confident and to let them know that they can succeed in today society", said Roz Urbano, Project Leader and Chair of the Social Outreach Committee, Market Date Retrieval. The members of the Social Outreach Committee work closely with the Corporate Volunteer Council. In the past five years, the CVC has clothed approximately 560 children in the Valley community through this program. Just as importantly, the CVC showed these children they are special, people care about them, and are interested in their success in school. Click pictures to see a larger view!
