Harvest House III is now history as the Valley United Way’s Corporate Volunteer Council (“CVC”) and scores of community volunteers built and stocked to overflowing the walls of of the unique building  on Shelton’s Riverwalk on Saturday, September 26 as the 2009 Week of Caring Project. On Monday, September 28, Valley agencies removed the food from the shelves for distribution to the needy throughout the Valley, the walls were dismantled and the building safely stored away for future use.

Similar to previous Harvest Houses built by the council in 2005 and 2007, Harvest House III is a 400 square foot structure constructed from an estimated 100,000 donated non-perishable food items. The project is a way to raise awareness of the large number of hungry in our community and to encourage food donations to the Valley agencies that strive to feed them.

Partnership with Echo Hose Ambulance

This year’s Harvest House project had an exciting addition, thanks to a partnership with Echo Hose Ambulance Service of Shelton. Echo Hose which celebrated their 60th anniversary with a Community Picnic held next door to the Harvest House on the Riverwalk. The free family event included food, a “Touch an Ambulance” exhibit, and a concert by the Highland Rovers Irish Band.
